subsignal FAQ version 0.3 as of 2002-10-24

2. Who is subsignal?

We're currently no more than four to six people, students of various faculties of BU Weimar, with a common interest: free software and cheap hardware.

3. What's your point?

We are spreading the "news" about open source, and trying to apply it to our computing needs. Most of us rarely use Windows, some don't at all. We will help you if you want to get on that road. All that's needed is a little English (see above) and some effort to open your mind and dig into all that console-stuff that seems so cryptic to you now.

4. Can I ask you a question?

Please do. You can ask whatever you want, especially if it is about Linux. We might not be able to help you directly, but try to point you to the necessary resources where you might find solutions. When you look by our place (see below), and we are just sitting there concentrated on some terminals, have no fear to interrupt. We will tell you so if we're currently very busy, but usually we at least have one open ear and some internal scheduling time for you.

5. Can I just drop by at your place?

Yes please! We're now open regularily on wednesdays from 6 to 10 in the evening, and on sundays from 7 to 11. Also, we might be hanging out any other times. Just check if our door is open when you are fetching coffee in s140.

6. What will I find when I come by on sundays?

Currently, it's just like on wednesdays - a few people either socializing and talking TCP/IP, or working on obscure terminals. We are currently planning to extend the sunday to hold a short (2-3hr) "how-to" session as overviews of how-to-solve-this-and-that-problem on linux, and show some classic hacker movies afterwards. Keep your eyes open for flyers holding our brandmark.

7. Can you help me with my Windows/Mac problem.

No, sorry. Please understand that we have to draw a line somewhere, and that is simply that we won't support commercial (proprietary) operating systems. There are alternatives- Linux, FreeBSD, etc. If you want to dig into these, we will help you. Besides, you can still come by and ask stupid questions even about Macs and Windoze stuff. Maybe we will answer them :)

8. Oh you linux geeks. Ain't that elite-building bullshit?

No, quite the contrary. Look: Being able to afford Windows or MacOS is building an elite. Linux is free. Admittedly, it is a bit harder to work with. But we're open to non-geeks. You just have to bring some interest in the alternatives. If your Windows doesn't work, call Microsoft Technical Support and bug them, please.
